The General Healthcare System (GESY) has significantly changed the way residents of Cyprus access basic dental care. However, many patients aren't entirely sure what is and isn't covered — in this article, we explain in simple terms what you can expect.
What GESY covers
For adults, GESY fully covers one clinical examination and one professional dental cleaning (scaling) per year, through a registered provider. The exact terms and frequency are set by the regulations of the Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) and may be updated over time.
What is not covered
Beyond the annual check-up and cleaning, GESY does not cover other adult dental treatments — fillings, extractions, root canal treatment, crowns, dentures, and implants are paid in full by the patient at the clinic's standard rates. The same applies to cosmetic procedures such as teeth whitening, porcelain veneers, and adult orthodontic treatment.
How it works in practice
To use your GESY coverage, your dentist must be a registered provider within the system. During your visit, the dentist enters the treatment electronically into the HIO system. Patients typically pay only a small co-payment per visit, depending on their income category.
What to ask before your appointment
Before booking an appointment, it's a good idea to confirm: (1) whether the clinic is a registered GESY provider, (2) whether the specific treatment you need is covered, and (3) exactly how much you'll pay as a co-payment. A transparent clinic will explain this clearly before any treatment begins.
At DentLux Clinic in Aglantzia, we welcome GESY patients and make sure to explain clearly what is covered before any treatment starts.
