What it is

Dental pain rarely comes at a convenient time. If you have a toothache, swelling, a broken or knocked-out tooth, or a lost filling or crown, call the clinic: we arrange to see urgent cases as soon as possible during opening hours, relieve the pain and treat the cause.

What counts as a dental emergency?

Severe or throbbing toothache, swelling of the gum or face, a tooth knocked out or pushed out of place, a broken tooth with a sharp edge or pain, bleeding that does not stop after an extraction, and a lost filling or crown that hurts. Facial swelling with fever or difficulty swallowing or breathing needs a hospital emergency department straight away.

What we do at an emergency visit

We first find the cause — with a clinical examination and, where needed, a digital X-ray — and then relieve the pain. Depending on the cause this may be a temporary filling, draining an infection, starting a root canal, smoothing or repairing a broken tooth, or re-cementing a crown. We then explain what further treatment, if any, is needed.

Knocked-out tooth: act fast

Hold the tooth by the crown (the white part), not the root. If it is dirty, rinse it briefly in milk or saline, do not scrub it. If you can, put it back in its socket; otherwise keep it in milk and call us immediately — the first hour matters most. Baby teeth should not be put back.

Step by step

  1. Call us

Tell us what happened and how much pain or swelling you have, so we can find the earliest time.

  2. Examination & X-ray

We find the cause of the problem, with a digital X-ray where needed.

  3. Pain relief

We treat the immediate problem — for example a temporary filling, draining an infection or smoothing a broken edge.

  4. Next steps

We explain clearly whether further treatment is needed and what it involves.

Materials & equipment we use

Digital X-rays

Quick, low-dose images to find hidden infection or fractures.

Temporary restorations

Protect a broken tooth or open cavity until the final treatment.

Local anaesthetic

So the emergency treatment itself is comfortable.

After your visit

  • Follow the specific instructions we give you for the treatment you had.
  • If you were given a temporary filling, avoid chewing hard food on that side until the final treatment.
  • Take any medicine exactly as prescribed — antibiotics are only given when there is a clear need.
  • Book the follow-up treatment we recommend; a temporary fix does not replace the final one.

GESY (ΓεΣΥ)

Emergency dental treatment for adults is generally not covered by GESY. We explain the cost of what you need before we treat you.

Questions everyone asks

What should I do if I have a bad toothache?+

Call the clinic. Until you are seen, an ordinary painkiller taken as directed on the pack and a cold compress on the cheek can help. Do not put aspirin on the gum, and avoid very hot or cold food.

My filling or crown fell out. Is it urgent?+

If it hurts or leaves a sharp edge, call us to be seen soon. Keep the crown, and do not try to glue it back with household glue.

When should I go to hospital instead?+

If you have swelling spreading in the face or neck, fever, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or heavy bleeding after an injury, go to the nearest emergency department straight away.

Do you see emergency patients who are not registered with you?+

Yes. You do not need to be an existing patient — call the clinic and tell us what happened.

Is swelling a reason to come in quickly?+

Yes. Swelling of the gum or face is often a sign of infection and should be seen soon. If it spreads quickly, or you have fever or difficulty swallowing or breathing, go to a hospital emergency department.
