What it is

A root canal has an unfair reputation. Done with modern techniques and proper anaesthesia, it is a routine, comfortable procedure — and the best way to relieve severe tooth pain while keeping your natural tooth instead of losing it.

When is it needed?

When deep decay or a crack lets infection reach the pulp — the living core of nerves and blood vessels inside the tooth — the result is often intense, throbbing pain, sensitivity to heat, or swelling. At that stage the infection will not heal on its own; it needs to be cleaned out.

What actually happens

Under local anaesthetic, a small opening is made in the tooth and the infected pulp is gently removed. The canals are disinfected, shaped and sealed, and the tooth is then rebuilt with a tooth-coloured filling or crown. Most patients describe the experience as no worse than a large filling — and the pain relief is immediate.

Saving the tooth matters

A treated natural tooth preserves your bite, your bone and your appearance far better than an extraction. That is why we always try to save the tooth first — and tell you honestly when we cannot.

Step by step

  1. Diagnosis

An examination and X-ray confirm that the nerve is infected or inflamed.

  2. Anaesthesia

The tooth is fully numbed before we begin.

  3. Cleaning the canals

The infected pulp is removed and the canals are cleaned, disinfected and shaped.

  4. Sealing

The canals are filled and sealed so bacteria cannot return.

  5. Rebuilding

The tooth is restored with a tooth-coloured filling or, when needed, a crown.

Materials & equipment we use

Rotary endodontic files

Fine, flexible instruments that clean the canals precisely and quickly.

Gutta-percha

The standard, biocompatible material used to seal root canals.

Digital X-rays

Used before, during and after to confirm the canals are fully treated.

Questions everyone asks

Does a root canal hurt?+

With modern anaesthesia it feels much like a large filling. It actually ends the toothache that brought you in.

Wouldn’t it be simpler to pull the tooth?+

Keeping your natural tooth protects your bite and bone, and replacing a missing tooth later costs more. We always try to save it first.

Will I need a crown afterwards?+

Back teeth often do, because a treated tooth is more fragile. We tell you honestly whether yours needs one.
