Tooth Extraction & Wisdom Teeth

A tooth extraction removes a tooth that cannot be saved, or a wisdom tooth that is causing problems, under local anaesthetic. A simple extraction usually takes 20–40 minutes and most people feel back to normal within two to three days.

What it is

Sometimes a tooth cannot be saved, or a wisdom tooth has no room to come through. In those cases a careful extraction under local anaesthetic is the right step — and we always explain why, what the alternatives are, and how the gap will be managed afterwards.

When is an extraction needed?

We always try to save a tooth first. An extraction is usually considered when a tooth is broken beyond repair, badly loosened by gum disease, causing repeated infection, or — in the case of wisdom teeth — impacted, partly erupted or repeatedly inflamed.

Simple and surgical extractions

A simple extraction removes a fully visible tooth with gentle instruments after the area is numbed. A surgical extraction is used when a tooth is broken at the gum line or still partly under the gum or bone, as is common with lower wisdom teeth. A panoramic X-ray (OPG), taken in our own clinic, shows which applies before we start.

Planning for the gap

If the missing tooth matters for chewing or appearance, we discuss options such as an implant or a bridge before the extraction, so you know the full picture from the start.

Step by step

  1. Assessment & X-ray

We examine the tooth and take an X-ray to see the roots and nearby structures.

  2. Options first

We explain whether the tooth can be saved and, if not, how the gap can be managed.

  3. Numbing

Local anaesthetic is given and we check that the area is fully numb before starting.

  4. The extraction

The tooth is gently loosened and removed; you feel pressure, not sharp pain. Stitches are placed if needed.

  5. Aftercare & check

You leave with written instructions, and we see you again if stitches need removing.

Materials & equipment we use

Panoramic X-ray (OPG)

Taken in our own clinic to plan wisdom tooth and surgical extractions.

Sterile surgical instruments

Single-use or fully sterilised instruments for every patient.

Local anaesthetic

Numbs the tooth and surrounding area for the whole procedure.

After your visit

  • Bite gently on the gauze for 30–45 minutes to let a blood clot form.
  • For the first 24 hours do not rinse, spit forcefully, smoke or drink through a straw — the clot protects the socket.
  • Eat soft, lukewarm food and chew on the other side for a few days.
  • Ordinary painkillers and a cold compress on the cheek help with soreness and swelling.
  • From the next day, rinse gently with warm salt water after meals.
  • Call us if pain gets worse after day 3, bleeding does not stop, or you develop fever or spreading swelling.

GESY (ΓεΣΥ)

For adults, GESY covers an annual check-up and cleaning, not extractions. We tell you the cost before the extraction is done.

What our patients say

“I recently visited DentLux Clinic, and I must say, it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. The clinic itself is modern, clean, and inviting, which immediately put me at ease. The staff was incredibly friendly and professional, making sure I felt comfortable every step of the way. The dentist took the time to explain every procedure in detail, which I really appreciated. It’s clear they prioritize patient care and comfort. The treatment itself was seamless, and I left feeling well taken care of. Another highlight was the advanced technology they use—it made the process faster and more efficient than I expected. If you’re looking for a dental clinic that combines expertise, professionalism, and a warm atmosphere, I highly recommend DentLux Clinic!”

Questions everyone asks

Does a tooth extraction hurt?+

The area is numbed, so you feel pressure and movement but not sharp pain. Some soreness for a few days afterwards is normal and is usually managed with ordinary painkillers.

Do all wisdom teeth need to come out?+

No. Wisdom teeth that have come through properly and can be kept clean can stay. We recommend removal when they cause repeated inflammation, decay, damage to the neighbouring tooth or other problems.

Will I need time off work?+

After a simple extraction most people return to work the same or the next day. After a surgical wisdom tooth extraction, plan for one or two quieter days.

What is a dry socket?+

It happens when the blood clot is lost from the socket a few days after an extraction, causing increasing pain. It is more common after lower wisdom teeth and in smokers. Call us — it is treated simply in the clinic.

Should I replace an extracted tooth?+

Not always — a missing wisdom tooth does not need replacing. For other teeth, a gap can let neighbouring teeth drift and affect chewing, so we discuss options such as an implant, bridge or denture.
