Do you see pink in the water when you rinse, or blood on your toothbrush? Many people think it is normal, or just brush more gently. In fact, bleeding gums are one of the first signs that something needs attention, and the earlier you deal with it, the simpler it is to fix.
What bleeding gums mean
Healthy gums do not usually bleed. The most common cause is gingivitis, inflammation of the gums caused by plaque, the thin layer of bacteria that forms on teeth all the time. If plaque is not removed, it hardens into tartar, which brushing cannot remove and which needs a professional cleaning.
Common causes
- Poor or irregular oral hygiene, especially between the teeth.
- Tartar irritating the gums.
- Brushing too hard, or using a hard toothbrush.
- Hormonal changes, for example in pregnancy.
- Smoking, certain medications or general health conditions.
What you can do at home
- Brush twice a day with a soft toothbrush, using gentle circular movements.
- Floss daily or use interdental brushes. They may bleed a little at first, but with steady hygiene they usually improve within a few days.
- Do not stop brushing where it bleeds. That makes the problem worse.
When to see a dentist
Book an appointment if the bleeding lasts more than two weeks despite good hygiene, or if you notice:
- Swollen, red or sore gums.
- Persistent bad breath.
- Receding gums, or teeth that look longer.
- Loose teeth.
Gingivitis is reversible when treated early. If left alone, it can progress to periodontitis, which affects the tissue and bone that support the teeth and is harder to treat.
