Gum Disease Treatment

Gum disease is inflammation of the tissues that hold your teeth, caused by bacterial plaque: it starts as gingivitis (red, bleeding gums) and, if untreated, can progress to periodontitis with bone loss. Treatment usually starts with a deep cleaning below the gum line in one or two sessions, followed by regular maintenance visits.

What it is

Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy smile. Gum (periodontal) disease is one of the most common oral health problems — and, caught early, one of the most treatable.

Recognising the signs

Bleeding when brushing, red or swollen gums, persistent bad breath, receding gums and loose teeth are all warning signs. Left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, damaging the bone that supports your teeth.

How we treat it

Treatment starts with a thorough periodontal assessment. Early-stage disease is usually managed with professional deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) with local anaesthetic for comfort, combined with a personalised home-care plan. More advanced cases may need targeted periodontal therapy, which we plan together with you, step by step.

Keeping your gums healthy

Regular hygiene visits and good daily care protect the results of treatment. Our team will show you exactly how to keep your gums healthy between visits — prevention is always the best treatment.

Step by step

  1. Gum assessment

We measure the pockets around each tooth and check for bleeding and bone loss.

  2. Deep cleaning

Under local anaesthetic, tartar and bacteria are removed from below the gum line.

  3. Home-care plan

We show you exactly how to brush and clean between your teeth for your gums.

  4. Re-check

After a few weeks we measure again to confirm the gums are healing.

Materials & equipment we use

Ultrasonic & hand instruments

Remove hardened deposits gently from the root surfaces.

Antiseptic rinses

Reduce bacteria in the pockets after cleaning.

Interdental brushes

Chosen in the right size for you, to keep the gaps clean at home.

After your visit

  • Gums may be tender and teeth sensitive for a few days; a soft toothbrush and a sensitive toothpaste help.
  • Use the interdental brushes and any mouthwash we recommend every day.
  • As the swelling goes down, the gums may tighten and the teeth can look slightly longer — this is part of healing.
  • Not smoking makes a real difference to how well gums heal.
  • Keep your maintenance visits, usually every 3–6 months.

“I recently visited DentLux Clinic, and I must say, it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. The clinic itself is modern, clean, and inviting, which immediately put me at ease. The staff was incredibly friendly and professional, making sure I felt comfortable every step of the way. The dentist took the time to explain every procedure in detail, which I really appreciated. It’s clear they prioritize patient care and comfort. The treatment itself was seamless, and I left feeling well taken care of. Another highlight was the advanced technology they use—it made the process faster and more efficient than I expected. If you’re looking for a dental clinic that combines expertise, professionalism, and a warm atmosphere, I highly recommend DentLux Clinic!”

Questions everyone asks

My gums bleed when I brush. Is that serious?+

Bleeding is the first sign of gum inflammation. Caught early it is fully reversible, so it is worth a check.

Is deep cleaning painful?+

It is done under local anaesthetic, so it is comfortable. The gums may feel tender for a day or two.

Can gum disease cause tooth loss?+

Yes, if left untreated it destroys the bone that holds the teeth. Treatment aims to stop it getting worse.

What is the difference between gingivitis and periodontitis?+

Gingivitis affects only the gums and is reversible with good cleaning. Periodontitis has also affected the bone; it can be controlled with treatment, but lost bone does not grow back on its own.

Is gum disease linked to my general health?+

Research links periodontitis with conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. Tell us about any medical conditions — looking after your gums is part of looking after your health.
