Both fixed braces and clear aligners can straighten teeth; the right choice depends on how complex your case is and whether you can wear aligners for about 22 hours a day. For many mild to moderate cases aligners work well, while some more difficult tooth movements are achieved more reliably with braces.
In this guide we compare the two options, explain what is different for a teenager and for an adult, and describe what to expect from the first examination through to retention.
How fixed braces work
Fixed braces are small brackets bonded to the teeth and connected by a wire. At each review appointment the wire is adjusted so the teeth gradually move into the right position. They come in metal or in more discreet tooth-coloured versions.
Their main advantage is that they work around the clock without you having to remember anything, and they cover a wide range of cases, including more complex movements.
How clear aligners work
Clear aligners are a series of thin, transparent, removable trays made specifically for your teeth. Each aligner moves the teeth a small step, and every few weeks you move on to the next one in the series.
They are barely visible, come out for eating and brushing, and usually need fewer visits for adjustments. The result, however, depends a great deal on you: if they are not worn for about 22 hours a day, the teeth do not move as planned.
Braces or aligners: the key differences
- Appearance: aligners are barely visible; braces show, although more discreet options exist.
- Commitment: braces work on their own; aligners need you to wear them consistently.
- Eating: with aligners you eat normally once they are out; with braces you avoid hard and sticky food.
- Cleaning: aligners come out, so brushing is easier; braces need careful cleaning around every bracket.
- Complex cases: some movements, such as large rotations or significant bite corrections, are often done more reliably with braces.
At your examination we tell you honestly which option suits your case. Sometimes both are suitable, and then the choice is yours.
For teenagers: what parents should consider
For teenagers, treatment often starts once most of the permanent teeth have come through. Braces have the advantage that they cannot be left in a drawer, which matters at this age. Aligners can suit a teenager who is consistent and has a suitable case.
For children, a first orthodontic check around the age of 7 is often recommended, so that any problems with jaw growth or crowding are noticed early. This does not mean treatment starts then; it usually starts later.
For adults: it is not too late
Teeth can be moved at any age, as long as the gums and bone are healthy. Many adults start treatment because their teeth have become crowded over the years, because they did not have treatment as children, or to prepare the mouth for other work such as an implant or a crown.
If there is gum inflammation, we treat it first. Moving teeth on inflamed gums can make things worse.
What happens at the first examination
At the first visit we examine your teeth, gums and bite, and take X-rays, photographs and impressions or a digital scan. Based on these we explain which method suits you, roughly how long treatment is likely to take and the full cost. You do not need to decide on the day; you can take time to think it over and ask us anything that concerns you.
How long does treatment take?
Usually 12 to 24 months, depending on the case. For the first few days after each adjustment or new aligner the teeth feel a little tender; this is normal and passes quickly, and soft food helps. Every few weeks we hold short reviews to follow your progress.
Retention: the part you should not skip
After treatment, teeth tend to drift back towards their old position. That is why a retainer is needed: a thin wire bonded behind the teeth, a removable retainer for night-time, or both. The retainer is what keeps the result, and it must be worn exactly as we advise.
Cost and GESY
Orthodontic treatment at DentLux starts from €2,000. The final cost depends on the case and the method, and we explain it together with the payment plan before treatment begins. For adults, GESY covers one clinical examination and one cleaning a year; orthodontic treatment is not covered. You can read more on our Orthodontics (Braces & Clear Aligners) treatment page.
Frequently asked questions
Are clear aligners as effective as braces?
For many mild to moderate cases, yes, provided they are worn about 22 hours a day. Some more complex movements are better done with braces.
Can I have orthodontic treatment if I have fillings or crowns?
Usually yes. We assess this at the first visit, together with the health of your gums and your X-rays.
Do braces hurt?
The teeth usually feel tender for a few days after each adjustment or new aligner, and this settles quickly. If a wire or bracket rubs on your cheek, contact us.
Do I have to wear a retainer forever?
To keep the result, a retainer is needed for a long time, often for years, at least at night. We give you specific instructions for your case.
